The Rise, Fall, and Revival of Mamoke Business Group
The Rise, Fall, and Revival of Mamoke Business Group Inc.
From Island Enterprise to Community Comeback
A Community-Led Beginning
Back in the early 1980s, Mamoke Business Group was born out of a collective vision to uplift the livelihoods of islanders. Managed in partnership with CPL Company, the group ventured into the shipping industry, serving as the island’s only link to Madang Town, the south and north coasts of Madang, and even parts of the Bismarck Sea.
For local people, private businesses, and institutions, Mamoke wasn’t just a company—it was the lifeline connecting them to markets, goods, and opportunities beyond their shores.
The Golden Years
During its heyday in the 1980s and 1990s, Mamoke’s shipping service became an essential part of daily life on Karkar Island. It was more than a business; it was a unifying force, proving what community-driven efforts could achieve.
But success didn't come without its challenges.
The Decline: Mismanagement and Closure
As the new millennium approached, cracks began to form. Mismanagement plagued the organization, and despite its vital role, Mamoke Business Group struggled to keep afloat. In 2001, the company’s operations ground to a halt.
The only shipping business on the island collapsed, leaving a void in transportation and local commerce that lingered for years.
Two Decades Later: A New Chapter Begins
Fast forward to 2023—a year of hope and revival. Local leaders and stakeholders came together once again to re-register Mamoke Business Group Inc., this time with a stronger vision and a new, dedicated governing body.
This rebirth wasn't just symbolic—it came with a clear, actionable roadmap for the future.
Enter: Mamoke Consultancy and Mamoke Farmers Cooperative
With fresh leadership came fresh ideas. Two new arms of the business were launched:
- Mamoke Consultancy Service: Offering strategic guidance and support to local businesses and initiatives.
- Mamoke Farmers Cooperative: A business unit focused on empowering local farmers, fostering sustainable agriculture, and creating economic value from the grassroots up.
Together, they represent a modern, diversified approach to business—one that honors Mamoke’s past while embracing a sustainable future.
Looking Ahead
The story of Mamoke Business Group is far from over. It's a story of resilience, of a community that refused to let its vision die, and of a business that’s finding new life through innovation and collaboration.
As the group moves forward with renewed energy, it stands as a shining example of what local ownership, unity, and determination can achieve—even after years of silence.
